LAPD's Fearful Reaction to #StraightOuttaCompton Shows Strength of Black Media

Black Power & Social Media

"Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will” - Frederick Douglass

The film #StraightOuttaCompton came into theaters this weekend (8/14/15) and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) reacted by increasing patrolling duties of officers near theaters in Los Angeles. In the wake of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, police departments across the nation are paranoid. LAPD reacted to the power that Black people are building by increasing surveillance; the powers at be are fearful of the consciousness raising occurring in the Black Community and beyond.

In thinking through the question: Why does LAPD feel the need to increase police presence during the screenings of #StraightOuttaCompton? I reflect on a quote by Frederick Douglass, where he believes “power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will”. The point that Douglass is making is that in order to make an institution of power relinquish some of their power, is to demand something from them. The film requires the minds of movie-goers to witness police brutality on the screen. The film served as an opportunity to grow political consciousness. And the LAPD felt some type of way about this, thus the increase in police presence at select theaters. In this case, the LAPD represents an institution with power, due to their capacity and ability to murder people, and get away with it due to the Police Bill of Rights , Fraternal Order of Police and various nuances in the legal system that continue to let officers misuse their power.

The #BlackLivesMatter movement coupled with the Black film #StraightOuttaCompton highlights the POWER that Black people possess. Black people in 2015, have utilized social media to create a collective consciousness that counters the narrative told by media outlets owned by the six major corporations . Black Social Media is resistance. This power was enough to force the LAPD to deploy resources in an attempt to quell the movement. However, my generation will not be stopped, in fact we will win.

In The Wretched of the Earth by Frantz Fanon he bestows wisdom by stating, "each generation must discover its mission, fulfill it or betray it, in relative opacity” my generation is utilizing the power of technology and mass communication to fulfill our mission. I believe an aspect of my generation’s mission is utilizing social media to raise awareness and consciousness about the injustice that exists around the world, and in particular to Afrikan/Black people. We have done this through Direct Action across the nation, uploading videos of injustice, and speaking truth to power. We now have the power, we must use it.

If there ever needs to be an official endorsement of an upcoming artist, let this be it. Mylo MU, is a self-proclaimed "Visual and Sonic Artist".

If there ever needs to be an official endorsement of an upcoming artist, let this be it. Mylo MU, is a self-proclaimed "Visual and Sonic Artist". “I design sound” he claimed in an interview an instrumental compilation , remix of chief keef , and a free form verse all in one week! The supply of music Mylo MU is providing will cause a demand in more of Mylo MU’s art.

Enjoy this single "Real and Psychadelic (Prod. Weird Eye) by Mylo MU

I asked him what caused this recent splurge of art, and he claimed,“its time to start outputting so people can dig”… He realized how much potential energy there is in the universe. He referenced The Alchemist and spoke of how all things in the universe will conspire to what you think. He’s making sure he puts out his thoughts and emotions out sonically. He wants people to explore the dimension he’s in.

Destiny Iwuoma's Response to Photo with Janet Napolitano

Peace Community,

On March 22nd 2014, The California Alumni Association hosted an annual event called the Charter Gala, and we celebrated the founding of University of California at Berkeley.  I was personally invited by the Executive Director of the California Alumni association to engage in this celebratory event.

My intent in going to this event was to connect with Cal Alumni and understand their experiences as Cal Students, not to meet Janet Napolitano. I did not have any knowledge that Napolitano was going to be present at the Gala. At the Gala I had a conversation with one of the organizers of the event. He enlightened me that Janet Napolitano was currently at the event. He said that he could get me an opportunity to meet her. Moments later Napolitano walked by and when she finished talking another guest, the organizer introduced me to her.

I introduced myself as Destiny Iwuoma. In our brief encounter I voiced how I felt the University of California did not meet the needs of students of color in higher education. After expressing that I am passionate about taking the steps necessary to make sure the University of California meets the needs of students of color, we took the picture and we went our separate ways.

As a senator one of my platforms is Cultural Competency where I encourage my peers to share their stories and understand different points of view and experiences. As a Senator I believe it is important to establish relationships with those you do not see eye to eye with on every issue. I believe it is the only way society will advance by having critical dialogues across difference.

I want to recognize that as an elected official I am human, therefore I am not perfect. However, I recognize that my decision to post a picture of Napolitano caused people to react and those reactions are completely valid. I recognize that community members feel Napolitano represents trauma, hurt, separation, privatization, militarization, deportations, criminalization and much more to community members. I apologize that the picture I took with Napolitano triggered community members to react as they did, and I would like to validate those feelings.

I recognize that it was not the best decision to post the picture on social media, especially with the lack of description in the caption. It was not my intent to undermine students who are organizing to get Napolitano out of office, and my personal choice to take a picture with Napolitano does not reflect the entire CalSERVE Coalitions stance on Napolitano’s appointment. CalSERVE as a coalition endorses the Students of Color Solidarity Coalition and the No2Napolitano organizing that has been done.

Genuinely,

Destiny Iwuoma
